Why a dude should read

The dudes from Verdicks have been flexing their mental muscles thanks in part to Lex Fridman and his 2023 reading list. So far this year we have read and discussed:

  • On the Road

  • 1984

  • Never Finished

  • A Brave New World

  • The Stranger

  • The Yellow Wallpaper

  • Frankenstein

  • The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

  • The Adam and Eve Story: The History of Cataclysms

  • The Little Prince (in progress)

  • Player of Games (in progress)

As it turns out, reading for fun is not just for old ladies and nerds. It’s also for dudes who want to better themselves. Reading comes with some serious benefits that are sure to help you become a better dude. So, strap on your thinking caps and let's dive in to uncover some of the reasons why reading should be on every man's to-do list.

Obvious benefits:

  1. It's a Brain Workout: Just like hitting the gym, reading gives your brain a workout. It helps improve your concentration, memory, and critical thinking skills, which is always a good thing, especially when trying to impress others with your smarts.

  2. Improves Vocabulary: Want to sound smarter? Pick up a book. Reading is the ultimate way to expand your vocabulary and impress people with your expansive use of words. Plus, it's a great way to beef up your flirting game.

  3. Boosts Emotional Intelligence: Reading allows you to empathize with characters and understand their perspectives. This, in turn, makes you more aware of other people's emotions, which is key in relationships, both romantic and otherwise.

  4. Increases Your Cool Factor: There's nothing cooler than a man who reads. It shows that you are well-rounded, curious, and have a thirst for knowledge. And, let's be real, it's a surefire way to make all the other guys at the bar green with envy.

  5. Gives You Something to Talk About: Ever find yourself in an awkward conversation? Maybe your uncle wants to talk about politics or your aunt wants to tell you all about her cats. Reading can help with that. With a book in your hand, you'll never run out of topics to discuss, whether it's with your friends, a potential love interest, or even a stranger on the bus.

Hidden benefits

  1. Impressing a lady? - Let's face it, women love a man who reads (we have no evidence to back this up). Imagine walking into a party and starting a conversation with a beautiful woman about the latest best-seller. You'll have her hanging on to your every word, trust me.

  2. Avoiding awkward silences - You'll never run out of things to talk about. Whether it's at a family gathering, a friend's BBQ or even a first date, you can always bring up a book you recently read and voila! Instant conversation starter.

  3. Being the smartest guy in the room - Let's be real, who doesn't like to be the smartest guy in the room? Reading gives you the chance to broaden your horizons, learn new things and become a trivia master.

  4. Getting more Zzz's - Reading before bed is a great way to relax and unwind, which will lead to better sleep. Who doesn't want a good night's sleep?

  5. Become a storyteller - Want to captivate your friends with your storytelling skills? Read more books! From fiction to non-fiction, you'll have a wealth of stories to share with those around you.

Reading rocks and has multiple benefits. So, next time you're feeling stuck, pick up a book and get lost in its pages. Reading is not just for school or work, it's a way to improve your life in so many ways. So, grab a book, find a quiet corner, and start reading. Trust us, you won't regret it.
